Mite 8U
OVERVIEW
Our Mite program starts with the building blocks of our hockey language. The objective is to create players who are fluent in the language of the game and are able to solve the problems the game throws at them because they have a high skill set. CTGC has a development thesis for your young player with specific focuses on skating foundation and ability to handle a puck. Our program is ideal for the player who typically would be funneled into travel hockey and already has an interest in the game. Space is limited to 20 families.
APPROACH
In our view, hockey is the best sport in the world. It helps build team-oriented, hard-working, mature young people. However, we continue to try and train young players as if they were 18,19,20. Too many games. Too much of an emphasis on outcome. Not allowing kids to develop over time by expecting them to be good at age 10. The results are predictable. Most kids stop playing hockey (and many other sports) by age 12 (read this article on why kids quit playing). Kids flame out of the sport because they don’t have a rock solid foundational skill set that allows them to keep developing beyond age 12. We are trying to change that approach.
- Skill development comes first 3.5 hours of practice a week
- It must be fun Lots of on-ice games with skills built-in
- No travel You go to the same two rinks all year long
- Nearly 90 Hours of ice
- Summer Camp Included in Tuition
- Our behavioral expectations for players are high, but appropriate.
- Room for fall sports Our season doesn’t fully kick off until October
- No tryouts Effort and behaviour are the only things that can get you removed from Conn GC - you can’t get cut. Players in our mite track are forever part of the Conn GC family and can migrate into our Squirt and Peewee tracks.
